Fort-Liberté Bay

The bay takes its name from the town of Fort Liberté, a name given by Haitian Generals after their independence from France in 1804. Previously, the French called it Port Dauphin, and the Spaniards referred to it as Bayaha, using the original Taíno name. It was also known as Fort Royal during the reign of Henry Christophe, King of Haiti. Due to its unique configuration, Fort Liberté has always been a safe harbor.
